Skagway Cruise Port: What You Need to Know

do you need passport for caribbean cruise

It also requires a government-issued driver's license or a photo ID with your name and date of birth. Even if you're on a closed-loop sailing, certain islands in the Caribbean – Guadeloupe, Martinique, St. Barts, Barbados and others -- require a passport for entry. It's your responsibility (not your cruise line's) to learn the requirements of each of the destinations you're visiting before you go. In a nutshell, a passport card is a plastic card that can fit into a wallet and are accepted for land and sea border crossings between  the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Bermuda and the Caribbean. Passport cards cannot be used on cruises from international homeports. The exact travel documentation required depends on what citizenship you hold, as well as where your cruise is sailing from and to.

Cobranded Cards

And government authorities may require you to have a visa or meet other requirements. For closed-loop cruises, guests of all ages do not typically need a passport to travel. However, valid passports are required for open-loop cruises and international cruises that stop at ports outside the United States, Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean. However, while many cruise lines may not require passengers to bring their passports, plenty recommend it, as does the U.S. It can come in handy if you need an emergency medical evacuation or the ship has to schedule an emergency docking at a different port that's not on your itinerary.

Domestic Cruises that Leave and Return to U.S. Ports

Note that the birth certificate can’t be the cute one with the baby’s footprints issued by the hospital; it needs to be issued by the Vital Records Department in the state where the child was born. Depending on where you are traveling and your nationality, you may also require an entry visa to board the ship or enter certain countries the ship will visit. While most cruise lines are happy to provide this information, it is ultimately the passenger’s responsibility to ensure they have all of the necessary visas before they board the ship. Cruise lines recommend that every passenger have a passport when traveling, even on closed-loop cruises when one isn't strictly necessary.

Accepted Identification for Canadian Citizens & Permanent Residents

Regarding travel visas, each traveler must check with the embassy or consulate offices for travel visa requirements and get the necessary visas. This applies to all countries they plan to visit on their journey, including any countries they might stop at during connecting flights. These requirements may change over time, so it’s always a good idea to check with Royal Caribbean or your travel agency for the most up-to-date information. For more in-depth information regarding required travel documents for getting on board Royal Caribbean International, see the Getting Onboard with The Right Travel Documents page.

Guide to Cruise Passport Policies for U.S. Travelers

Since you have to send out your birth certificate to get your passport, we don’t advise you send off for a passport if the time for departure is less than a two months away. Keep in mind that you will need a passport if you have to do any air travel outside the United States. This way, in case your ship leaves without you, or you have to fly home from the Caribbean unexpectedly, you will have the means to do so.

If cruising from California, with most sailings 14 nights or longer, your choices expand to such lines as Holland America, Celebrity, Viking Cruises, and Seabourn. On one-way sailings, such as between Montreal and Boston on Holland America Line, you will need a passport to fly to or from Canada. This point should be top-of-mind especially because of COVID-19 and any other medical emergency that would require the trip to be altered or a medical evacuation.

Travel document requirements for sailings from Dubai

Again, you could board the ship with an enhanced driver’s license or a valid government-issued photo identification and a birth certificate. This ensures that the name on the ticket matches the person boarding the ship. You might be surprised to know that certain U.S.-based cruises allow you to cruise without a passport. But just because some cruise passport requirements allow for “no passport cruises” doesn't mean you should sail without one.

Exactly how many islands, islets, reefs and cays are found in this area is unclear, but some speculate as many as 700. Some Caribbean islands were created by volcanoes and have towering mountain ranges, like Puerto Rico, Jamaica and Martinique. Others are not volcanic and are quite flat, like Antigua and Barbados. Their Regent Seven Seas and Oceania Cruises, in particular, are renowned for their luxury.

Carnival Cruise Line, often hailed as “America’s Cruise Line,” is a leading figure in the world of cruising. Established in 1972, it has since evolved into the most favored cruise line globally. The company boasts a fleet of 26 ships, each offering unforgettable vacation experiences. For instance, a week-long cruise around the Western Caribbean & Perfect Day, which begins and ends in Miami, Florida, is a closed-loop cruise. It visits several countries like the Bahamas, Jamaica, Haiti, and Grand Cayman, but returns to the original U.S. port. So, while a passport may not always be necessary for a cruise, it’s a good idea to carry one for maximum flexibility.

However, if you don't have a passport, or don't wish to get one, you can still cruise — you're just limited to North American cruises sailing round trip from U.S. departure ports. If you live in the U.S., you will also need the original copy of your Alien Registration Card (ARC or "Green Card") and any other documentation the countries on your itinerary require due to your alien status. While some cruises may not mandate a passport, it’s always smart planning to carry one.

If you are a U.S. citizen and cruising out of the United States (meaning your cruise begins and ends in the United States), then you do not need a passport. Some cruises might include stops at foreign ports that require a valid passport book to leave the ship. Also, if a cruise starts or ends in a foreign country, including Canada, or if it starts and ends at different U.S. ports, a valid passport book is always required.

Taking a cruise abroad is an unforgettable experience and an amazing way to see the world. To help you better prepare for your voyage, here are a few passport tips and best practices to follow when planning your international cruise. We chose to go to Kayserberg and Riquwhir, (hope I got those spellings correct), and enjoyed them immensely. We chose the Riquewihr option (it was combined with Colmar at the time) and loved the cute little town. There is one main street and it is lined with wine shops that offer free tastings. ] The boat was docked in Breisach so we had a chance to walk around on our own after the excursion got back -- that was plenty of time.

The Van Gogh museum is fantastic -- a great collection of his paintings plus an entire floor devoted to restoration techniques.

Visit a local vineyard for a tasting of the region’s wines and stroll through the famous Drosselgasse with its taverns, garden restaurants, beer bars, and live music venues. Venture into the idyllic countryside to explore the charming towns of Volendam and Edam with today’s morning excursion. In Volendam, soak in the atmosphere of its traditional fishing village, characterized by closely built houses and locals donning traditional costume. Afterward, visit a local cheese farm for an insightful tasting experience before strolling through Edam, where highlights include the Carillon tower and the historic cheese weighing house. We had a special excursion to Colmar when we did this cruise over New Years as there was still a Christmas market still open there. It was one of the prettiest towns we have ever been to,, especially all decorated for the holidays.

After looking at AMA's detailed itineraries posted on their web site, it looks like they spend more overnights in port going this direction as compared to starting in Amsterdam. We are thinking this may give us a few more opportunities for port town dinners, evening trips into town, etc. Not sure if this is true of all cruise lines since not all provide as much info on sailing times. This afternoon, relax on deck as we cruise through the legendary Upper Middle Rhine Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its dramatic riverbanks adorned with vineyards and picturesque castles. Later, we arrive in the winegrowers town of Rüdesheim.

This morning begins with a picturesque cruise down the enchanting Moselle River, the Rhine’s principal tributary. Marvel at the steep, terraced vineyards that define the region, ranking it as one of Germany’s largest wine-producing areas. In the afternoon, upon reaching Cochem, we explore its quaint streets, medieval gates, venerable churches and uncover the majestic Reichsburg Castle, perched high above the town.

That gave us pretty much the entire day to explore Amsterdam. When we arrived in Basel we left the boat early. Some people actually left as early as about 4AM or 5AM. The only thing we saw of Basel was from the window of the bus on the way to the airport which at most was 30 minutes.

There are lots of German stops on this cruise but not too many French ones, so we thought this was a good day to go French and we were very happy with the choice. It was the best of 9 river cruises we have taken so far. As far as more or less time in ports I can't really judge that. From Amsterdam to Basel you are going against the flow of the river. The only thing I can see that doing is using more fuel to fight the current.

We had plenty of time in each port to do and see what we wanted to. The only drawback we experienced is where the mooring pontoons are sometimes. I guess they are on a first come, first serve basis and we were moored too far from some town centers. I doubt that has anything to do with which direction the boat is traveling in though. Wake up in Lucerne and get ready for an all encompassing day with both lakes and mountains on the horizon. Take your coach to one of Switerzland’s most legendary places, Mount Pilatus.

As evening descends, indulge in a delightful dinner onboard, sharing the day’s experiences with fellow travelers. Upon arrival in Amsterdam, our local guide greets us with a smile. Settle into your hotel before enjoying an afternoon at leisure to explore this unique city, known for having more bicycles than people and a charming atmosphere. In the evening, join us for a relaxing Welcome Dinner to meet your fellow travellers before we embark on this Journey together. Start your Journey with us by enjoying a private car pick-up service from your home. Upon arrival at the airport, guests departing from the Toronto airport are assisted with their check-in.
